Mr Perfect heat pumps for Hamworthy Park Junior School
The problem faced by the school was that the pool heat pump system was inefficient, producing poor water quality and turnover time.
As such, the goal of our partner Bluewater Swimming Pools was to install a replacement air source heat pump to improve the functionality of the pool and future-proof it for the next 10 years. In addition, the school was keen to find a solution that allowed it to move away from gas heating.
The consultant for the school, Bennington Green, was tasked with finding a sustainable pool heating solution that was cost-effective and reliable all year round.
The pool is used by pupils for swimming lessons, as well as recreation by the wider community as a facility for adult classes and external hirers.
Specifications for the Job
The existing school swimming pool measures 16.6m x 8.0m and has a water volume of just over 165m². Our partners at Bluewater Swimming Pools carried out extensive upgrades to the existing pipework and hydraulics before the new installation.
This included:
- New skimmers.
- Pipework for main drains.
- New return inlets.
- Upgrading 50mm flow and return pipework to 110mm.
The water in the pool was previously heated by two direct-fired gas boilers, deep bed filters and pumps. With these being removed, the surrounding pipework infrastructure was brought up to current standards.
The Mr Perfect heat pump system
With many different heat pump suppliers considered for the project, it was the suggestion of the Mr Perfect system from Aquark that went ahead. This choice of swimming pool heat pump solved the two major concerns of the client, which were maintaining a consistent 30-31°C temperature at all times of the year, as well as a comprehensive warranty and aftersales service. In the case of Mr Perfect, the pumps are backed up by an impressive 5-year manufacturer parts warranty and a 12-year warranty on the compressor!
The Mr Perfect features a twisted titanium heat exchanger for greater heating efficiency. This supports its ability to heat and cool water to 40°C and 12°C, respectively, which is well within the project requirements. The units also use patented InverPad Turbofan technology for world-record noise cancelling.
The Installation Process
Installation of the three 41Kw units took place over the course of just two days, including delivery. The decision to install three separate units instead of one large unit was taken to allow for flexibility. In the event that a unit goes offline, the school will be able to run on the other two.
This is a massive advantage as it removes the need for the installation of a backup heating system. The performance of the Mr Perfect system is so impressive that even if one of the three were to stop working, the other two could compensate without a drop in heat. No such backup was therefore installed for this project.
The units were enclosed once the installation was complete to prevent damage or vandalism.
The Finished Product
With such a quick installation process, the pool heat pumps recommended by Paramount Pools went to work, providing exceptional performance.
With the project being completed around the start of the winter months, the Mr Perfect heat pump was able to demonstrate its ability to perform reliably even under cold weather conditions. Remarkably, the pool was brought up to 30°C from 14°C within 48 hours without using a thermal cover!
The finishing touches on the project came in the form of a replacement thermal cover for the pool, along with a new onsite lining system carried out by Aquaflex. The latter addition sees the final aesthetic improvement of the swimming pool to bring it up to modern standards.
